Solina story part 2 - from FEBC via TWR to OMF

This is the second part of Solina story, published earlier in this blog. Solina was tortured by Khmer Rouge, but she survived. After the Khmer Rouge collapsed and Vietnamese army came to Cambodia, she escaped to Thailand. 

During the Khmer Rouge camp, she was able to survive with a bowl of rice a day, and wearing the same clothes. One month she slept on earth floor. Finally, when Vietnamese came, Solina escaped to her own village. She walked there and met her dad and sisters who lived there. They escaped to Thailand separately, 3AM truck took them to Thailand. In Thailand, there stayed in seven camps. Lord stopped her in one camp, by a South African lady who prayed for her in 1979. After that, she met a Youth with a mission lady, who opened her Bible. Solina saw pictures of Jesus and realized how painful it was for Jesus too. The power of cross helped to forgive. Lord changed her heart. Earlier she had thought that she will never go to Cambodia. But Lord changed her heart, and she wanted to go back. Because of Christ she is now in Cambodia.

One morning she walked along the mountain, carrying her water buckets on both sides, she saw beautiful sign. When she was a kid, she had used to go every afternoon to a Catholic priest house. She know only about Protestants and Catholics, she never heard about Christians. Even though her grandma stayed in the temple all the time, her family has not devoted Buddhist; they did not have an altar at home. She herself was a scientist, however she wore a cross as a modern sign. Her mother used to call her a child of Jesus.

She always thought ‘one more day to live’, since the Rouge killed during the night time.

She produced Khmer language programmes to FEBC SW from 1993-1999. After that, she was on loan for TWR in 1999-2001. During that time she launched Project Hanna from Singapore. After that, she was producing content to New Life radio which partners with OMF.

Kambodzan ongelmia

Keskustelin UNICEFin työntekijän kanssa Kambodzan tilanteesta. Hän sanoi, että

Kambodzan lasten suurin ongelma on aliravitsemus. Se johtuu osaksi siitä että äidit eivät lapsen synnyttyä rintaruoki lasta. Hän ei saa riittävästi ravintoaineita eikä vitamiineja. Hedelmiä ja kasviksia ei käytetä hyväksi. Monesti kambodzalaiset kasvikset ja hedelmät ovat kalliimpia kuin ulkomailta tuodut. Aliravitsemuksesta aiheutuu kitukasvuisuutta, eivätkä lasten aivot kehity normaalisti. Jälkeenpäin on hyvin vaikea korjata lapsuudesta asti vallinnutta aliravitsemusta.

Parempiosaisten perheiden kohdalla taas lapsia kohtaava suurin ongelma on riippuvuus internetistä. Monet puhelinoperaattorit tarjoavat rajoittamatonta YouTuben käyttöä, siksi monet nuoret katsovat musiikkivideoita paljon.

Toinen lapsia koskettava ongelma on koulunkäynnin jääminen kesken. Monet käyvät ala-asteen, mutta varsinkin tyttöjen kohdalla opintie päättyy siihen. He joutuvat menemään joko torille myyjiksi tai perheeseen apulaiseksi ja tuomaan lisää rahaa kotiin. Maaseudulla tyttöjen pitää mennä pellolle auttamaan peltotöissä.

Maanviljelijöiden ongelma on kuivuus. Siitä ei pidetä suurta halloota, mutta se huomaamatta kalvaa viljelijän tuloa. Yksikin vuosi kuivuutta kaventaa satoa. Kambodzassa ei valtio maksa katokorvauksia. Viljelijä joutuu ahtaalle, ja monet saattavat muuttaa kaupunkiin tai naapurimaahan toisenlaisen toimeentulon toivossa. Tästä taas seuraa se, että perheen elättäjä jättää perheensä, ja usein työn järjestäjät petkuttavat niin etteivät anna työläisille heille kuuluvaa palkkaa. Kambodzaan jäänyt osa perheestä joutuu taloudellisiin vaikeuksiin, ja sitten lasten pitää alkaa etsiä keinoja ansaita rahaa.

Families need teaching about emotions

One the of the popular programs on Krusa-FM is called Family seminar, hosted by pastor Joseph Keo and his wife Makara. During the Kkmer Rouge time, the  families were separated. Purpose of family seminar program is to teach how to live family life. Pastor Keo shared me that in Cambodian families, expressing the emotions is difficult. It is one of the key topics in family seminar, to learn to express your emotions to your spouse, show affection and love. Also one topic is forgiveness. Here a couple shares what it means to them to participate in family seminars.

Currently family seminars run in eight provinces. Keos visit those localities once or twice a year. At first, Keos teach the content of the book they use related to the seminar, and the second time, it is kind of training of trainees seminar. So that each participant will be able to run their own seminars. There is such a tremendous need for this kind of training.

Today we met a very poor listener. He is 32-year old man, living in this modest house (above). He got blinded in motorbike accident. His family does not care for him, since he has become a Christian. Now he lives near a local church, so church members come and help him. But since he is blind; radio, and Krusa-FM especially is his best company. He listens it all the time. Research assistant Sophors interviewed him and filled the questionnaire for him.

This church  (below) is one of the poorest churches I have seen. Structure is not important obviosly.

Onnellisia lapsia

Olen täällä Mondulkirin maakunnassa nyt toista päivää tapaamassa kuuntelijoita. Mondulkirissa on vuoristoista, ja kulkumatkat hankalia ja pitkiä. Siksi jotkut vanhemmat sijoittavat lapsensa erään kirkon yhteydessä toimivaan asuntolaan. Siellä on peräti 42 iältään 5-17-vuotiasta lasta. Useimmat lapset tulevat buudhalaisesta perheestä, mutta heille opetetaan raamattua ka kristillisiä sisältöjä täällä. Vanhempien mielestä se on ihan ok, kunhan vain lapset saavat hyvän koulun. Kerran pari vuodessa he menevät koteihinsa kuukaudeksi. Mutta nämä lapset olivat aivan ihania, lauloivat, leikkivät, keksivät pihaleikkejä yksi toisensa perään ja kiipeilivät puihin. Heillä ei ollut leluja. He tekivät ruohosta koristeita.

Osa heistä osasi lukea, varsinkin 10- ja 12 vuotiaat. Joskus toinen 8-vuotias saattaa olla kakkosluokalla ja toinen 10-vuotiaana kakkosluokalla. Eli he aloittavat koulun eri iässä, joskin 7 v on normi. Kun kysyit mitä he halauvat lukea, yksi vastasi 'mörkötarinoita'.

Mondulkiri - the province of mountains

Visiting listeners in different provinces also shows me how Cambodia varies. During a drive from Kampung Cham via Kratie to Mondulkiri, the scenery changed from that of rivers and fertile land in Kampung Cham to a drier looking land with flocks of cows and waterbuffaloes along the road in Kratie. Approaching Mondulkiri, you could feel the weather cool down a little bit, and see more mountains. The road went up and down and many curves and warning signs of steep downhill. I was happy that none of those downhills were really steep.

Since we were driving to Mondulkiri during the night, it was interesting to look at houses. All of them near the road were connected to electric grid. From several homes, you see a big screen tv screen entertaining the family. In some cases, the the family was sitting in circle in front of the house, sharing their evening meal. Some houses were burning their litter, there were many small bonfires. We stopped at the local diner, had some rice, dried fish and cooked chicken and I of course had a smoothie. Villagers came to see me :-).

We are here to meet SW listeners, since the Krusa-FM signal from Phnom Penh is not audible here at all. We visited a local church, with a small school connected to it. Inside the church there were many pictures of Jesus, which showed the 'white' Jesus, those typical pictures of Bible stories you know. No wonder some Cambodians sometimes have called Jesus 'the American God'.

Kyselylomake vihdoin valmis

Sophary, minä ja Sam Chann purkamassa evaluaation kiemuroita.
Tässä evaluaatioprojektissa ollaan menty soutaen ja huopaen. Tuli vähän takapakkia kun huomasimme että khmerin kielisessä kyselylomakkeen käännöksessä oli kysytty kahdessa peräkkäisessä kysymyksessä 'Mistä pidät Krusa-FMn ohjelmissa?' Toisen kysymyksen olisi pitänyt olla - mistä et pidä jne.
Kysymys on sen verran oleellinen että meidän täytyy aloittaa tutkimus alusta. Toki jo nyt noin sata täytettyä kyselylomaketta analysoin, mutta ne käytetään vain alkutestausaineistona.

Toinen jatkuva tiimiämme vaivannut ongelma on kyselylomakkeiden eri versiot ja erilaiset yhdistelmät kysymyksiä eri lomakeversioista.  Tänään sille tuli loppu ja meillä vihdoin on pdf muodossa khmerinkielinen ja suomenkielinen kyselylomake. Sopharyn (alla) käännösapu on kuluneen kahden päivän aikana ollut tarpeen.

Sophary odottaa toista lasta syntyväksi marraskuun lopulla. Ensimmäinen, Hezekaih on 1 vuosi ja 4 kk. Puoliso Allan on Kriisiradiomiehiä. Mike Adamsin kanssa hän tuli juuri kouluttamasta BBCn nepalilaisia työntekijöitä kriisiradion käytössä.
Heidän kotonaan on aivan tyypillinen kambodzalainen sohvakalusto - raskaasta puusta. Jostain syystä kambodzalaiset tykkäävät raskaista puukaapistoista ja pöytäkokonaisuuksista. Eivät ainakaan pölyty, eikä kukaan niitä varasta kun ovat niin raskaita.

Talking bag and many other events

Today was one of my frustrating events, but also it was funny event. Som Chann and I went in the morning to the bus station to buy ticket to Kampong Cham bus. No tickets any more. Only for the V.I.P van. OK. We took it.

While waiting, Sam Chann enjoyed her morning rice, and my morning milk which I never drink. But this time, I felt like I had to order something since I was sitting in the cafeteria. It was fun to watch mothers taking care of the kids.

Soon the driver came to get us into the van. Us two climbed it. I was laughing, that such a big van just for the two of us. But I was wrong. In the following two hours we were collecting people from the city, sometimes drove around the block, sometimes turned around. Five times past the train station.

At one point, a talking bag had appeared to the bag. Luckily the hens quieted down as the driver decided to drive a little bit. The beginning of the journey was slow, but when we finally had full load of ten passengers, we started flying. Som Chann told the driver to slow down. But no.

After an hour of fast driving, the van stopped at the side of road. Driver went to nearby house to get a bucket of water. I guess the motor had gotten too hot. There we waiting for a while and wondering will this ever start again. And it did!

Evaluation team has now arrived to Kampong Cham, since one person of the team, Sophary lives here. Today we sorted out the final questionnaire, and noticed that we had been doing a wrong version of questionnaire. Those first questionnaires will be used as a test. Sophary is also good in translation, so she will see how well Vanda, the latest team member, has translated the Khmer for English. Some of the interviews we collect during evaluation will be used also for marketing, and encouraging donors about the impact of the Krusa FM, or Voice of Love SW, or Voice of Love box ministry.

Buddhalaisuuden ilmentymiä minulle

 

Kambodza kun on buddhalainen maa, täällä näkyy kirkkojen sijaan buddhalaisia temppeleita. Temppelialue on yleensä aidattu, rauhallinen ja viihtyisä alue. Maakunnissa olevat temppelialueet ovat rauhallisempia kuin Phnom Penhissä. Pääkaupungissa on myös turisteja temppelialueella.

Temppelialueella on kupolinmuotoisia stupia, eli tavallaan pyhäinjäännösmuistomerkkejä. Niissä säilytetään tärkeiden munkkien pyhäinjäännöksiä. Sitten on myös tavallisia hautamonumentteja. Joidenkin temppleialueiden yhteydessä on munkkien asuntola.

Minä olen harvoin nähnyt munkkeja temppelialueella. Heitä näkyy täällä vähemmän kuin esim. Myanmarissa. Kambodzalaisten munkkien väri on oranssi, kun taas Myanmarissa he ovat syvän tumman purppuranpunaisia.

Lauantaina lenkillä ollessani näin muutamia munkkeja. He pysähtyvät pikkukauppiaiden eteen ja yleensä heille annetaan jotakin syötävää kulhoon. Usein munkki pysäytetään, ja hän messuaa siunauksen. 

Pääkaupungissa ei kuulu munkkien ääntä kaiuttimista, mutta maakunnissa, esim. Battambangissa heräsin aamulla munkkien messuamiseen, aivan kuten Indonesiassa herään imaamin rukoushuutoon. Lokakuun 16. vietettiin kuningas Norodom Sihanoukin muistopäivää. Julkisilla paikoilla ja temppeleissä on hänen kuvansa.

Research can be fun!

 This week I got to meet many listener group with my team. We travelled with a big van from Phnom Penh to Kampung Chhnang, Battambang and Pursat. Each location we met with listeners, two locations with Krusa-FM, and one location with Voice of Love SW listeners.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate how the FM service and SW service meet the listeners’ needs, what they like to listen and how Krusa-FM could serve them better.

In each meeting, the research assistant Sophors explains this purpose and delivers the four-page questionnaire. The other assistant, Vanda gives out the pens. Most participants usually start filling the questionnaire, slowly. But always there are few who sit staring at the questionnaire. Sophors tells them that he and Vanda will help with the filling in the answers.

Sometimes I feel like we need more assistants. The truth is, in country side, there are much more illiterates than I expected. There are many things I have learnt about doing research in rural areas. One thing is, make the questionnaire as simple as possible. Even in our four page questionnaire usually only two pages are filled.

The other thing is, be ready to interview people orally. I have heard that Cambodians do not always understand the question, but once talking, you can clarify things.

The third thing is, Cambodians are not used to say their opinions. That is why it is difficult to get them answer about wishes and wants.

I have really enjoyed meeting the people in different provinces. I have practiced certain simple sentences to talk in Khmer. My teacher (lukru) has been a 22-young old Indonesian Mennonite volunteer 'Bobby' (in the photo in the very front) here at Krusa-FM. He has been learning the language for six weeks, and has a book that I can use.

It has been very encouraging the hear families again and again saying how Krusa-FM gives them hope, or trustworthy information, or health tips. 

Maakuntakierroksella opittua

Sain kahden päivän aikana tutustua kolmeen maakuntaan, Kampong Chhnangiin, Battambangiin ja Pursatiin. Battambang on kuuluisa hyvälaatuisesta riisistään. Meitä oli pakulla liikkeellä yhteensä kahdeksan, joista puolet oli teknistä henkilökuntaa ja toinen puoli kuuntelijavuorovaikutusporukkaa. Matkat Kambodzassa ovat pitkiä, ja tiet kuoppaisia, joten matkustaessa ei oikein muuta voi kuin ihailla maisemia. Minä opettelin indonesialaisen vapaaehtoisen Bobbyn kanssa khmerin kieltä. Hän aloittelijana on hyvä opettaja. Mutta voi vanhaa pääparkaani! Uudet sanat huonosti tarttuvat aivokuoreeni. Yritän vain sitkeästi.

Ja tilaisuuksia tuli tällä reissulla. Meillä oli kolme kuuntelijatapaamista, ja aina tapaamisen aluksi minä tietysti esittelen itseni  ’Gnjom schmuo Eila. Gnjom mok bi Finlandia’.

Tapaamisen aluksi aina Sophors, tutkimusapulaiseni esittelee arviointitutkimuksen tarkoituksen. Sitten hän jakaa nelisivuisen kyselylomakkeen tapaamiseen tulleille. Toinen apulainen, Vanda, jakaa kynät. Sitten alkaa kysymysten ryöppy. Ja muutamat istuvat hiljaisena eteenpäin tuijottaen – he eivät osaa kirjoittaa. Sophors vakuuttaa, että hän ja Vanda tulevat auttamaan niitä jotka eivät voi itse lomaketta täyttää.

Kymmenen minuuttia kulunut. Huomaan että vain muutamaan ensimmäiseen kysymykseen on vastattu. Tajuan, että lomake on liian vaikea maaseudun ihmisten täyttää. Heille on annettava aikaa, ja heitä on autettava sen täyttämisessä. Onneksi minulla on khmeriä taitavia tutkimusapulaisia.

Lopuksi kuuntelijat esittävät laulun kiitokseksi. Minä sanon khmerin kielellä ’Jumala sinua siunatkoon’, Som Preaong protiempo nea. 

Useimmat kuuntelijatapaamiseen tulijat ovat Krusa-FM radion kuuntelijoita. Jotkut ovat aloittaneet lyhytaaltolähetysten kuuntelijoina (ja vielä sellaisiakin on joissain paikoin), ja sitten löytäneet Krusa-FMn. Eräs mies nauhoittaa vaimolleen ohjelmat eri paikkakunnalla töissä ollessaan (koska siellä Krusa-FM kuuluu) ja vaimo kuuntelee nauhoitukset jälkikäteen.

Ihanaa on aina tavata sellaisia jotka ovat vastaanottaneet Jumalan rakkauden eli tulleet kristityiksi, kuten tämä mies kymmenen kuukautta sitten. 

Solina story part 1

Netflix offers movie ’First they killed my father’. I just had watched on previous night. And the following day I met Solina, whose story goes along the same lines as the movie.

Except for she was at the age of 20 when she heard that Khmer Rouge had ordered everybody to evacuate the town since the Americans were supposedly to bomb the city. 

She wanted to escape the Khmer Rouge to Thailand, but was too late in her escape plan, as the Khmer Rouge took over in April 1975 when she was in Battambang, with her family. She told the same things as in the movie – ‘they made it hard for families to see each other, and we pretended not to know each other’, ‘all villages were kicked out from next to the highway’, ‘Khmer took our car’, and ‘my mother died out of infection, since there was not medicine’.

Khmer Rouge placed her to a group for ‘singles’, since she was single. They offered her a husband to marry. But she did not want to marry that man. Then she was handcuffed, and taken to be investigated. Long story short, she survived the tortures, and worked in three different camps, in one for doing errands in Buddhist temple, in one sowing hats form palm leave, and in one working and living in open field.

Once the Vietnamese came, she was transported to refugee camp in Thailand. In one camp Lord stopped her. That

Yllättäviä kohtaamisia partnerikokoontumisessa

Maanantaina olin mukana ensimmäisessä tutkimustilanteessa – partnerikokouksessa. Krusa evaluaation tarkoituksena on koota myös partnereiden mielipiteitä siitä, miten he kokevat yhteistyön radioaseman kanssa. Yksi arviointitilanteessa mukana olija oli pastori Ravy Van Luterilaisesta tunnista. Tietysti olin kiinnostunut heidän työstään, onhan Luterilainen tunti yksi vanhimpia kristillisen radion sisältökonsepteja maailmassa. 

Luterilainen tunti tarjoaa raamatunopetuksen lisäksi kahta raamattukirjekurssia, toista lapsille ja toista aikuisille. Lasten kurssiin kuuluu nukketeatteria.

Sain myös oppia että Phnom Penhissäkin on luterilainen seurakunta. Siispä sinne joku sunnuntai.

Partnerikokouksessa sain myös tavata henkilön jonka nimen olen usein kuullut mutta en koskaan aiemmin tavannut. Solinan piti tulla minun kämppikseksi Manilaan kun asuin siellä, mutta tulo viivästyi. Nyt sain haastatella häntä. Hänellä on todella mielenkiintoinen tausta. Hän selvisi punaisten khmerien kidutuksesta Battambangissa. Edellisenä iltana olin juuri katsonut elokuvan ’First they killed my father’, joten punaisten khmerien esiintulo, ja kansalaisten karkoittaminen luontoon, ja perheiden hajottaminen olivat mielessäni. Solina koki kaiken sen. Mutta Jumala puhutteli häntä luontonsa kautta. Solinalla oli tapana rukoilla ’Jumalaa joka loi ensimmäisen sadon’.

Solinan tuottamia sisältöjä kuten ’Raamatun naisia’, ’Minuutti Jumalan kanssa’ radioidaan sekä Krusa-FMllä että lyhytaalloilla.  

Partner meeting

On Monday was a test for my assistants about how they perform to give out the questionnaire. This time, it was a group of Krusa-FM partners. It was good for me be present, so I can really tell what research assistants have learnt and what they need to learn.

After filling out the evaluation questionnaire (designed by the Cambodian research team), the partners talked about the partnership. There were two pastors, and three content producers. This was only of the partner talks that the Krusa-FM evaluation wants to do. There are going to be many more partner talks in the provinces. 

The key is to find out how Krusa-FM, familyradio serves the local charities and churches. Also the evaluation includes how to improve the partnership. What I garnered from today’s talk (as Revy from the Lutheran hour ministries translated it to me), was that pastors see the influence of work extend further via media. Media facilitates the work. If you can not go to meet people, Krusa-FM does it for you, via radio, FB and streaming. 

One way of promoting Krusa-FM is to have these scarves, typical Cambodian scarves, but with added emblem of Voice of Love, which is the officially recognised name of FEBC here. Originally, Voice of Love was the call sign for the shortwave service. 

Kambodzaa rakennetaan

Phnom Penh on muuttuu jatkuvasti. Vähemmän ja vähemmän viheralueita ja järviä, ja yhä enemmän betoniviidakkoa ja rakennuksia. Työtoverini Brigit Adams kertoi, ajellessamme Tuk-tukilla torilta, että kiinalaiset mielellään rakentavat Kambodzaan korkeita kerrostaloja. Kysymykseksi jää, kuka sinne muuttaa.

Keskustaan on noussut parisen vuotta komea (näkyy katukuvassa kadun päässä), ja moderni toimistorakennus. Mutta se on aivan tyhjillään. Toimistotilat ovat liian kalliita, eikä kambodzalaisilla ole varaa asuttaa liikerakennusta. Nyt suunnitellaan liikerakennuksen katolle ravintolaa. Jospa sinne tulisi kävijöitä.
Vaikuttaa siltä että kambodzalaiset mieluummin asioivat toreilla ja ostavat ruokaansa katumyymälöistä.

First time with the new team

On Friday I met the two new team members, Vanda, next to me and Sophors, in the middle. The lady on very left is a waitress in the lunch place. Vanda, 21 and Sophors, 22 are both young Christians. Their story is similar in the way that they both are from the province, Buddhist families. They both came to Phnom Penh to study in the charity called Work to life. It organises computer and English courses to young people. It also provides a dorm for those who come from the rural area. Naturally I asked why did they change their religion. They both said that they met a pastor a share with the story of Jesus. They feel like He has helped them in their lives. Also Vanda's sister and Sophor's brother have become Christians. Vanda was baptised in the church pool, and Sophors will be baptised in the seaside this November.

It is a joy to work with these young people. Sophors is also learning Excel, so hopefully he will be able to do some statistics one day.
We practised interviewing. Sometimes we ran out of English words in coaching, so I had to ask a Krusa-FM staff, assistant to the director, Daneth Sovann, to explain everything in Khmer language.

Tippiä vai ei?

Saavuin tänään Phnom Penhiin. Lentoasemalla on kyydin tarjoajia pilvin pimein. Täytyy vain valita luotettavan näköinen ja hyvähintainen kyyti. Tällä kertaa valitsin Tuk-tuk'in koska 'myyjä' vaikutti vilpittömältä. Näytin hänelle lapun johon olin kirjoittanut määränpääni, Krusa-FMn osoitteen. Kyllä hän sinne osaa.

Ajaa huristelimme ensin Russian bulevardia jonka tunnistin. Kaunis ilma, kirkkaita värejä täynnä kadun pienet puotipuksut. Jossain vaiheessa otimme oikotien. Jossain vaiheessa kuskini alkoi ajella edestakaisin pikkukatuja. Silloin huolestuin. Kysyi uudestaan osoitetta. Sitten kysyi onko minulla puhelinnumeroa paikkaan. Ei ollut.
Ajelimme lisää päämäärättömästi. Sitten huomasin korkean maston. Muistan että Krusa-FM aseman lähellä on sellainen. Osoitin suuntaa minne mennä. Lopulta kadunkulma, jossa on bensa-asema ja josta monta kertaa kävellen olen kääntynyt Krusalle, tuli vastaan. Nyt tiesin tarkalleen missä olimme.

Onnellisesti ohjasin Tuktukin Krusan eteen. Maksuksi annoin 10 dollaria kuten oli sovittu. Kuski aneli tipiksi viittä dollaria. Annoin yhden dollarin. Sanoin kuskille että en voi antaa niin suurta tippiä koska hän ei tiennyt missä paikka on vaikka sanoi tietävänsä.

Kehotin häntä opettelemaan käyttämään älykännykän karttaohjelmaa. Ehkäpä seuraavalla kerralla.Hän ei ollut kovin innostunut karttaohjelmasta, mutta mahdollisuus suurempaan toivottavasti motivoit. Jostain syystä kambodzalaiset eivät piittaa kartoista. Mieluummin kysyvät suusanallisesti tietä.
